Step-by-step

  1. SWOLF = strokes + seconds = 16 + 22 = 38.
  2. Distance per stroke = 25 / 16 = 1.56 m.
  3. Strokes per 100m extrapolated = 16 ร— (100/25) = 64.0.

How to use this calculator

  • Pick pool length you swam.
  • Count strokes for one length (one arm hitting water = 1 stroke).
  • Time the length in seconds.
  • Sum = SWOLF; compare across sessions.

About this calculator

SWOLF (Swimming-Golf) = stroke count for one pool length + seconds for that length. Lower is better. Elites SWOLF in the high 20s to low 30s in 25m pool freestyle. Recreational adults often score 50-60. The two ways to lower SWOLF: take fewer strokes per length (improve glide / catch / pull) or swim faster โ€” usually you have to do both. Distance per stroke (DPS) is a related metric; ~2.0 m/stroke is solid recreational, 2.4+ m/stroke is competitive.

Frequently asked

Watches use accelerometer pattern recognition. Bilateral breathing or unusual catch can confuse them. Manual count is gold standard.
