How does the Rotate PDF work?
Rotate pages in a PDF that scanned in sideways or upside-down. Drop your PDF, choose how much to rotate (90°, 180°, or 270° clockwise), and pick which pages to rotate — all pages, only odd pages, only even pages, or specific page numbers. Click Rotate and your fixed PDF downloads. The "specific pages" option uses the format "1-3, 5, 8-10". File size and quality stay identical — only the page orientation changes. If a page is still upside-down after rotating, it may have already had a rotation applied; just run the tool again with another 90° turn until it's upright.
How PDF rotation works
PDF rotation changes a page's display orientation without modifying its content. The PDF specification stores rotation as an angle attribute (0, 90, 180, or 270 degrees) on each page. Rotating does not re-encode images, re-flow text, or affect the underlying content stream — it just tells the reader "display this page rotated by N degrees".
This means rotation is lossless. A rotated PDF has the same file size, the same content, the same font quality. It is fully reversible — rotating a page 90° clockwise then 90° counter-clockwise produces a file identical to the original.
When rotation is needed
Scanning artifacts — scanned documents sometimes come in rotated 90° or 180° depending on the scanner orientation. Rotating fixes this.
Mixed-orientation documents — a report with letter-oriented text pages plus landscape-oriented spreadsheet screenshots. Rotate the landscape pages so they display correctly when the reader flips the reading orientation.
Photos from phone — PDFs generated from phone camera captures often need rotation because the EXIF orientation flag was not properly translated.
Print preparation — some print workflows require specific rotation for double-sided printing to align correctly.
Rotation angles and their effects
90° clockwise: portrait becomes landscape rotated right (top edge becomes right edge).
90° counter-clockwise (270° clockwise): portrait becomes landscape rotated left.
180°: pages appear upside down. Rarely useful except to fix scans that came in inverted.
0°: no rotation (equivalent to removing an existing rotation attribute).
Rotating specific pages vs entire document
This tool supports rotating specific page ranges (e.g. pages 5-8) or all pages. Mixed-orientation documents typically need per-page rotation — the landscape pages get 90° rotated to match reading flow, portrait pages stay unrotated.
For documents where most pages need one rotation and a few need another, use the page-range option twice: rotate the majority first, then rotate the exceptions.
Rotation vs image-rotate in PDF editors
This tool rotates page display. Some PDF editors offer "rotate image" which physically re-samples the image content — an entirely different operation that reduces image quality and is essentially never what you want for orientation fixes.
The page-rotation approach preserves quality and is reversible. Always prefer page rotation over content rotation for orientation issues.
