About this calculator

Swimmers express pace in time per 100 m or 100 yards. A 1500m freestyle in 25:00 = 1:40/100m — solid age-group pace. Sub-1:00/100m is competitive senior level; sub-:54/100m is elite. The 100m pool standard makes pace conversion important — yards are 91.44% of meters, so yard pace looks faster but for the same swimmer the 100m pace is ~9% slower. Olympic 1500m freestyle final times: ~14:40-15:00 (under 1:00/100m).

Frequently asked

How does this compare to running pace?+
Swimming pace per 100 ≈ running pace per km ÷ 8 (very rough). Most swimmers find 1:40/100m hard if endurance-trained on land.
Why both units?+
US pools and meets often use yards (25-yd pool). International / Olympic = meters (50-m pool). Converting helps compare.
Strokes count?+
Pace is total time / distance regardless of stroke. But you'll be 30-60% slower in breaststroke than freestyle for the same distance.
Long-course vs. short-course time?+
Short-course (25m/yd pool) lets you push off walls more often = ~3-5% faster than long-course (50m). Pace differs accordingly.
Open water adjustment?+
Add 5-15% to pool pace for open water due to no walls, sighting, currents, and chop. A 1:40 pool swimmer is often 1:50-1:55 in open water.
