Image Alt-Text Audit

Walk a PDF's image XObjects and report which images have alt-text (/Alt) and which do not — the no-1 accessibility miss in most PDFs.

How does the Image Alt-Text Audit work?

Audit every image inside a PDF for the presence of alt-text (the /Alt entry on the image XObject). Missing alt-text is the most common accessibility gap in PDFs and the one that bothers screen-reader users most. The tool walks each page's resource dictionary, finds every image XObject, and reports whether each has alt-text set and what the alt-text says. It does not modify the PDF — fixing /Alt requires the source authoring tool (Word, LibreOffice, InDesign) at this version.

🔒 Security & Privacy

Frequently asked

No — it audits only. pdf-lib does not expose a clean API for setting /Alt on image XObjects after the fact. Fix at source-document time and re-export the PDF.
