About this tool
Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) is a government-backed 5-year fixed deposit that pays interest MONTHLY (unlike bank FDs which compound). Ideal for retirees or anyone needing predictable monthly cash flow. Deposit cap: ₹9 lakh single account, ₹15 lakh joint (2-3 people). Interest rate is revised quarterly by the Ministry of Finance — currently 7.4% p.a. Interest is taxable at your slab rate (no TDS by Post Office, but you must self-report). Premature withdrawal allowed after 1 year with penalty (2% before 3 years, 1% after 3 years).
