About this calculator

Pond volume drives pump sizing (turnover at least once per hour), fish stocking density (rule of thumb: 1 inch of fish per 10 gallons), and chemical treatment dosing.

Frequently asked

Pump turnover rate?+
Once per hour for ornamental ponds. Twice per hour for koi (heavy bio-load).
Fish capacity rule?+
1 inch of adult fish per 10 gallons. So a 500-gal pond can support 50" of fish (e.g., 5 koi at 10" each).
Why include shallow areas?+
Average depth captures usable volume. Plant shelves at 1 ft, deep zones at 3-4 ft for koi.
Chlorinated tap water?+
Treat with dechlorinator before adding fish. Chlorine kills aquatic life.
Winter overwintering?+
Ponds need 2+ ft deep zones to keep fish below ice line in cold climates.
