About this calculator

Automatic transmission fluid (ATF) needs service every 30-60,000 miles depending on transmission type and use. Severe service (towing, stop-and-go): half that. Drain-and-fill replaces 40-50% of fluid (~5-6 qt). Power flush replaces ~95% (10-14 qt) but is more expensive and controversial โ€” some manufacturers warn against it on high-mileage trans. Shop cost: $150-300. DIY: $70-150 in parts.

Frequently asked

Drain and fill vs. flush?+
Drain & fill: 40-50% replacement, safe for most trans. Flush: 95% replacement, risky on high-mileage units (clogs filter with loosened debris).
Service interval?+
Manufacturer specs vary widely. 30k for severe service, 60-100k for normal, "lifetime" on some sealed units (dubious).
CVT or DCT fluid different?+
Yes โ€” CVT requires CVT-specific fluid (Honda, Nissan). DCT (BMW, Audi) uses DCTF. Wrong fluid = ruin transmission.
When NOT to flush?+
150,000+ miles with no prior service: shifting may rely on settled debris. Flushing can cause failure within weeks.
Symptoms of bad ATF?+
Slipping shifts, hesitation, dark/burnt smell. By the time symptoms appear, often too late โ€” proactive service is cheaper.
