About this calculator

Coolant degrades over time — pH shifts, corrosion inhibitors deplete, water pump and radiator suffer. Service interval: 60,000-100,000 miles or 5 years (whichever first). Modern long-life coolants (OAT/HOAT) last 100k+; old green ethylene glycol just 30-50k. Always use the type specified in your owner's manual — mixing types reduces protection. Shop service: $100-200. DIY: $40-80 in parts. Doing the thermostat at the same time saves labor.

Frequently asked

Coolant types?+
IAT (green, traditional). OAT (orange/Dex-Cool, GM). HOAT (yellow, Ford/Chrysler). Pink (Toyota). Don't mix — always check manual.
How often?+
Old: 30k. Modern long-life: 100k. Many "lifetime" coolant claims don't hold up — service at 100k anyway.
Why thermostat at same time?+
Already drained, system open. Thermostat fails sticky-open (engine runs cool, poor MPG) or stuck-closed (overheating). $30 part insurance.
Pink Toyota coolant special?+
Yes — different chemistry. Some buyers ignore it for $30 cheaper green. Don't — Toyota voids warranty and you'll see corrosion in 50k.
DIY safe?+
Yes if you have catch pan + funnel. Coolant is mildly toxic to pets — clean spills + dispose at auto-parts store.
