About this calculator

Oil change intervals depend heavily on oil type. Conventional: 3,000-5,000 mi (the old "every 3,000" was for cars/oils of the 1990s). Synthetic blend: 5,000-7,500. Full synthetic: 7,500-10,000. Extended (Mobil 1 EP, Amsoil): 10,000-15,000. Always follow the owner's manual — modern cars often specify "synthetic, 7500 mi" but vary. Severe-service intervals (towing, dust, short trips, extreme cold) are half the standard.

Frequently asked

Is "every 3,000 miles" outdated?+
Yes for synthetic. Modern manufacturers spec 7,500-10,000 mi for synthetic. The 3,000-mile rule was for 1990s conventional oil.
Manufacturer's recommendation?+
Always follow owner's manual. Some brands (BMW, Mercedes) push 12,000-15,000 mi on factory synthetic — controversial but officially endorsed.
Severe service?+
Half the normal interval. Severe = towing, frequent short trips (<10 min), extreme heat/cold, dusty environments.
Time-based interval?+
12 months max for most oils, even with low miles. Oil oxidizes over time.
Oil-life monitor reliability?+
Good in modern GM/Ford/Honda — algorithm-based, not just mileage. Trust it within ±20%.
