About this tool
Sales tax rates vary widely by US state and locality — 0% in Alaska/Delaware/Montana/New Hampshire/Oregon to 9%+ in some California and Louisiana localities. Add-tax is straightforward; extract-tax (backing out the tax portion from a receipt total) is a bit less obvious. Both are common when invoicing across state lines or reconciling receipts.
Formula & notes
Add-tax: Total = Amount × (1 + Rate). Extract-tax: Amount = Total / (1 + Rate); Tax = Total − Amount. This calculator does both. For B2B in the US, remember that in most states services are not taxed unless bundled with tangible goods — verify with your local Department of Revenue for your specific line of business.
