About this tool
Dogs cost their owners $17,000-$35,000 over a typical 12-year lifespan; cats $12,000-$20,000 over 15 years. The single biggest variable is size (larger breeds eat more, cost more to medicate) and whether you buy pet insurance. This calculator lets you tune every recurring cost so the estimate reflects your actual pet, not an average.
Formula & notes
Sums monthly recurring costs (food, treats, litter for cats, insurance, preventive medication) × 12 × expected lifespan, plus one-time gear + annual vet check + a reserve for one major medical event. Defaults reflect a medium-sized dog in the US; adjust for your species, size, and locality. Excludes acquisition cost (adoption fee vs breeder purchase) — add that separately.
