What this measures

Return on Investment (ROI) is the profit or loss expressed as a percentage of your capital. For stocks it must include dividends received during the holding period and any commissions paid on entry and exit — using price change alone systematically understates real return.

Formula & example

ROI = (Ending Value + Dividends − Starting Value − Fees) ÷ Starting Value × 100. Buy 100 shares at $50 ($5,000), collect $200 in dividends, sell for $58 ($5,800), pay $10 total fees: ROI = (5800 + 200 − 5000 − 10) / 5000 = 19.80%.
