What this measures

Annual dividend yield expresses cash returned to shareholders as a percentage of the current share price. Use it to compare income-producing stocks with each other and against alternatives like bonds or REITs. Yield changes as the price moves — a rising yield can signal a price drop rather than a dividend hike.

Formula & example

Yield = (Annual Dividend per Share ÷ Current Share Price) × 100. Enter the per-share annual payout (sum of quarterly dividends over the trailing 12 months) and today's price. If a company pays $2.40 annually and trades at $60, its yield is 4.00%.
