About this calculator

A cube has 6 identical square faces. Surface area = 6s². Doubling the edge increases SA by 4× (squared scaling) but volume by 8× (cubed). The SA-to-volume ratio is 6/s — small cubes (e.g. ice cubes) have much higher SA/V, which is why they melt faster than blocks.

Frequently asked

Why 6 faces?+
A cube has 6 squares meeting at right angles — 4 lateral + 1 top + 1 bottom.
How does SA-to-V matter?+
Heat loss, gas exchange, drying — all proportional to SA. Small things lose/gain heat faster relative to their mass.
Cube vs. cuboid SA?+
Cube: 6s². Cuboid: 2(lw + lh + wh). Cube is the special case l = w = h.
Painting a cube?+
SA gives the area to paint. Liters of paint = SA / coverage rate (350 ft²/gal interior).
Soap-bubble cube?+
A cubic bubble has 6 flat faces — but real bubbles minimize SA, so they're spherical instead.
