About this calculator

A cube has six identical square faces and twelve equal edges. Volume V = s³. Surface area = 6s². Body diagonal (corner to opposite corner through interior) = s√3. Doubling the edge multiplies volume by 8 (cube law): the basis of cube-square problems in physics and biology.

Frequently asked

Why does volume cube while area squares?+
V = s × s × s (3D). Area = s × s (2D). Volume scales faster — cube of size 10 has 1000× the volume of size 1, but only 100× the area.
Cube vs. cuboid?+
Cube: all edges equal. Cuboid (rectangular prism): edges may differ.
Most efficient packing?+
Cubes tile space perfectly (no gaps). Spheres pack 74% (face-centered cubic) at best.
Body diagonal use?+
Longest item that fits inside a cube. A 5 cm cube can fit objects up to 5√3 ≈ 8.66 cm long.
Surface-to-volume ratio?+
For a cube: 6/s. Big cubes have smaller ratio = better insulation. Tiny cubes lose heat fast.
