About geometry calculators
Geometry calculators handle the standard shape mensuration problems: area and perimeter of 2D shapes (triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, ellipses, regular polygons), volume and surface area of 3D solids (spheres, cylinders, cones, pyramids, prisms), and more specialised computations (triangle solvers via SSS/SAS/ASA/AAS, circle geometry, coordinate distance and midpoint). The formulas come from Euclid's Elements originally and have not changed in 2,300 years.
For triangles specifically, ScoutMyTool offers separate calculators for the four uniquely-solvable cases (side-side-side, side-angle-side, angle-side-angle, angle-angle-side) plus the ambiguous side-side-angle case where zero, one, or two triangles may exist depending on the specific input values. The ambiguous case is handled explicitly — the calculator returns both solutions when they exist and states clearly when no triangle is possible.
For 3D solids, volume calculations use the standard integral formulas: V = πr²h for cylinders, V = (4/3)πr³ for spheres, V = (1/3) × base × height for pyramids and cones, and so on. Surface area computations handle both lateral surface area (excluding bases) and total surface area (including bases) with clear labeling. Compound solids (a cylinder with hemispherical caps, a cone-topped cylinder) are decomposed into standard components.
For coordinate geometry, distance uses the Pythagorean formula √((x₂-x₁)² + (y₂-y₁)²), midpoint uses (x₁+x₂)/2 and (y₁+y₂)/2, slope uses (y₂-y₁)/(x₂-x₁) with vertical-line handling. Circle equations return both standard form (x-h)² + (y-k)² = r² and general form Ax² + Ay² + Dx + Ey + F = 0.
