About this calculator

AHA recommends ≤25g added sugar/day for women, ≤36g for men. Naturally occurring sugars (in fruit, milk) are not flagged — only sugars added during processing. A standard 12 oz cola has ~39g added sugar — already over for most adults. This calculator splits total recipe sugar into "added" vs "natural" so the AHA comparison is honest. For desserts where sugar is added: assume 90-100% added.

Frequently asked

Added vs. natural — does it matter?+
Yes — natural sugar comes with fiber and water (apple) or protein (milk), slowing absorption. Added sugar is concentrated and metabolized faster.
Honey is "natural" — does it count?+
For nutritional purposes: yes, honey, agave, and maple syrup count as added sugar. Just because it's natural-source doesn't mean low-impact.
Why are AHA limits different by sex?+
Tied to average daily caloric intake. The 6%/9% of daily kcal as added sugar lands around 25g female / 36g male.
Are sugar substitutes counted?+
No — stevia, monk fruit, sucralose: 0 g sugar by definition. Sugar alcohols (xylitol, erythritol) are tracked separately on labels.
How much added sugar in baked goods?+
Cookies/cake: 90-100% of sugar is added. Muffins with fruit: 60-80%. Granola: 50-80%.
