  • Milliliters (ml)44.36 ml
  • Fluid ounces (oz)1.500 oz
  • Jiggers (1.5 oz)1.000 jigger
  • Ponies (1 oz)1.500 pony
  • Dashes (~1 ml)48.2 dashes
  • Barspoons (~5 ml)8.87 barspoon
  • Teaspoons (US)9.000 tsp
  • Tablespoons (US)3.000 tbsp

Step-by-step

  1. 1.5 oz ร— 29.5735 ml/unit = 44.360 ml. Other units derived by dividing ml by their definitions.

How to use this calculator

  • Enter the amount you have.
  • Pick the source unit.
  • Read the equivalent in every other common bar unit.

About this calculator

Bartender measurements layer Imperial, US customary, and traditional bar units. A jigger is the standard 1.5 oz (44 ml) bartending pour, doubled into a pony (1 oz) on the other side of the same tool. Dashes (~0.9 ml) and barspoons (~5 ml) are essential for bitters and small adjustments. The US shot (1.5 oz) equals the jigger; the UK/Europe shot is 25-50 ml depending on jurisdiction.

What this calculator does

This calculator converts any common bar measurement (jigger, pony, dash, barspoon, splash, rinse, oz, ml, tsp, tbsp) into every other common bar measurement. All conversions route through milliliters using the US-customary fluid-ounce definition (29.5735 ml). Useful when scaling a recipe up or down, when adapting an Imperial recipe to a metric jurisdiction, or when reading old cocktail manuals where dash and barspoon were the working units.

How it works โ€” the formula

ml_value = amount ร— ml_per_unit other_unit = ml_value / ml_per_other_unit Canonical ratios: 1 oz = 29.5735 ml ; 1 jigger = 1.5 oz = 44.36 ml ; 1 pony = 1 oz 1 dash โ‰ˆ 0.92 ml ; 1 barspoon โ‰ˆ 5 ml ; 1 tsp = 4.92892 ml ; 1 tbsp = 14.7868 ml

All bar units have NIST or industry-consensus ml definitions. Jigger and shot are 1.5 oz in the US; pony is 1 oz; dash is ~0.92 ml (modern convention); barspoon โ‰ˆ 5 ml โ‰ˆ 1 US teaspoon. UK pub measures (25/35 ml) are not provided here because they vary by jurisdiction.

Worked examples

Example 1
Standard pour to metric
Inputs:
amount=1.5, from=oz
Output:
44.36 ml; 1 jigger; 1 pony ร— 1.5; 48 dashes

Every classic cocktail base spirit is one jigger.

Example 2
Bitters dash conversion
Inputs:
amount=3, from=dash
Output:
~2.76 ml; ~0.55 barspoon; ~0.09 oz

Three dashes of Angostura โ‰ˆ slightly more than half a barspoon.

Example 3
Imperial-to-metric for European recipe
Inputs:
amount=2, from=oz
Output:
59.15 ml; 1.33 jiggers

Many European cocktail books use 30 ml or 60 ml as the base measure rather than 1 oz / 2 oz.

When to use this vs other tools

Use this for bar unit conversion. For cooking-volume conversions, the broader unit-conversion tools may be more appropriate.

  • Recipe Scaler

    Use to scale a multi-ingredient cocktail or batch recipe up or down โ€” bar units multiply proportionally.

  • Tip Calculator

    Use to compute tipping on a bar bill.

Authority note

International Bartenders Association (IBA) + NIST

IBA is the international professional body for bartending and codifies the measures used in competition cocktails. The underlying ml definitions for oz, tsp, tbsp come from NIST SP 811. Practitioner conventions (dash, barspoon, splash, rinse) follow modern industry consensus (Death & Co, Liquid Intelligence, PDT).

Limitations

  • US/IBA conventions only. UK 25/35 ml pub measures and EU 20-50 ml shots vary by jurisdiction.
  • Dash is approximate (~0.9 ml) โ€” actual volume depends on the dasher top and bottle viscosity.
  • Splash and rinse are colloquial โ€” useful for taste but not for reproducibility.
  • Doesn't convert weight units (some recipes call for grams of syrup or muddled fruit) โ€” use the recipe-scaler for cross-discipline conversions.

Bar measures are conventional; small variations in dash or splash don't materially affect cocktail outcomes. Use a jigger for the major pours.

Frequently asked

In the US, yes (standard cocktail measure). Bar tools labeled "jigger" outside the US can range from 25-50 ml depending on country.
