About this calculator

Installed flooring rates (material + labor): carpet $3-5/ft², LVP/laminate $5-8, tile $10-15, engineered hardwood $9-12, solid hardwood $12-18. Tile and hardwood vary most with prep — uneven subfloor or hidden moisture issues can blow budgets. Always order 10% extra for cuts and waste; tile patterns like herringbone need 15-20%. Removal of existing flooring runs $1-2/ft² depending on what's under it (carpet pad: easy; glued vinyl on slab: hard).

Frequently asked

LVP vs. hardwood?+
LVP: waterproof, scratch-resistant, $6/ft². Hardwood: timeless, refinishable, doubles in 30 years, $14/ft². LVP wins kitchens/baths/basements; hardwood wins everywhere else.
Why the waste factor?+
Cuts at walls, rip cuts to fit doorways, mistakes. Without waste you make a return trip mid-install for matching dye lot — risky.
Subfloor prep?+
Tile needs perfectly flat subfloor (≤1/8" in 10'). LVP tolerates more. Hardwood needs dry, flat, and acclimated. Add $1-3/ft² if subfloor needs leveling.
Carpet still good?+
In bedrooms: yes — warmth, sound, comfort. Living areas: most buyers prefer hard surface for resale.
Tile labor markup?+
Skilled tile install costs $5-10/ft² labor alone — patterns, miters, and waterproofing are time-intensive. Don't shop tile by lowest bid.
