How to use this calculator

  • Measure kitchen footprint in ft² (length × width).
  • Pick tier matching your finish quality.
  • Estimate appliance budget separately.
  • Keep contingency at 10-20% — kitchens hide problems.

About this calculator

NKBA and HomeAdvisor data put kitchen remodels at roughly $75/ft² (basic refresh — paint, hardware, laminate counter), $175/ft² (mid — semi-custom cabinets, quartz, tile floor), and $400/ft²+ (luxury — custom cabinets, slab counters, designer fixtures). Appliances are tracked separately because tier choice (Frigidaire vs. Sub-Zero) doesn't scale with kitchen size. Always carry 15% contingency — kitchens uncover the most surprises (rotted subfloor, outdated wiring, hidden plumbing).

Frequently asked

Why three tiers?+
NKBA defines them: basic (cosmetic), mid-range (cabinet/counter replacement), and luxury (full custom). They differ 5×+ in price.
Does ft² include the dining nook?+
No — measure only the kitchen work zone (typically up to where flooring or wall transitions).
What recoups best?+
NAR's 2024 Cost vs. Value: minor kitchen remodel recoups ~85%; major upscale recoups ~40%. Don't over-improve for the neighborhood.
How long does it take?+
Basic: 1-2 weeks. Mid: 4-8 weeks. Luxury custom: 12-20 weeks. Add 25% to any quote.
Why 15% contingency on kitchens?+
Demolition exposes 30+ year old plumbing, wiring, and subfloors that almost always need work. 15% covers the typical surprise; raise to 20% for homes >50 years old.
