═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Dear Scholarship Committee,

I am writing to apply for the The Riverside Foundation Excellence in Sciences Scholarship ($10,000 / year for 4 years (renewable)). I am Ellis Taylor, a graduating senior planning to attend Stanford University, intended major: Biology with Marine Science focus.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

WHY I AM APPLYING

I am applying for the Riverside Foundation Excellence in Sciences Scholarship because the Foundation's mission to support students pursuing careers in environmental and life sciences directly aligns with my long-term commitment to freshwater-ecosystem research. The Foundation's prior recipients include researchers I have followed through their published work; the support and community the scholarship provides would be transformative.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

QUALIFICATIONS

Academic record: GPA 3.96 unweighted, 4.42 weighted; National Merit Finalist; AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, IB Biology HL.
Research: Two years of independent research on environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring of the Willamette River, presented at the Oregon State Science Fair (1st place, 2025) and submitted for publication in the Journal of Student Research.
Leadership: Lincoln High School Science Olympiad team captain; founded a local-watershed citizen-science group with 40 active high-school participants.
Community: Volunteer interpreter at Tryon Creek State Park (200+ hours over two summers); biology peer tutor.

FUTURE GOALS AND HOW THE SCHOLARSHIP HELPS

After completing my BS in Biology with a Marine Science focus at Stanford, I plan to pursue a PhD in Environmental Science, specialising in freshwater ecosystem monitoring using eDNA and remote-sensing techniques. The combined approach is becoming the gold standard for tracking species presence and population dynamics in difficult-to-survey freshwater habitats.
Long-term, I aim to lead a research lab at a public university focused on translating eDNA research into practical conservation policy — particularly in collaboration with state fish and wildlife agencies. Public-funding scholarships like Riverside's are essential to making this PhD path possible without prohibitive debt; my family's financial situation does not permit fully self-funding undergraduate education and graduate work.

ENCLOSED DOCUMENTS

Completed scholarship application form
Official high school transcript
Two letters of recommendation (Dr. Sanchez, AP Biology; Mr. Park, Counselor)
Resume / activities list
Personal essay (1,500 words, per scholarship guidelines)
FAFSA Student Aid Index summary (financial-need component)

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Thank you for considering my application. I would be honoured to be associated with the Riverside Foundation and to represent its mission throughout my academic and professional career.

Sincerely,

About this template

A scholarship cover letter is a complement to the broader application, not a substitute for the application itself. Its job is to introduce the applicant, signal fit with the scholarship's mission, and direct the reader to the most relevant parts of the application package. The strongest cover letters do three things: (1) demonstrate the applicant has researched the scholarship — naming specific aspects of the awarding organisation's mission, prior recipients, or focus areas; (2) connect the applicant's background to those specific elements rather than generic excellence; (3) explain how the scholarship enables the applicant's plans, distinguishing genuine financial need from generic ambition. Specificity beats hyperbole — citing GPA, specific competitions won, named research projects, and named volunteer commitments outperforms generic adjectives. Avoid two common patterns: the "everything I've ever done" essay (overwhelming and unfocused) and the "I really want this" essay (personal but doesn't establish qualification). Successful applicants typically apply to 15-30 scholarships rather than relying on one or two; the volume reflects how competitive scholarships are. Local and niche scholarships (community foundations, professional associations, employer scholarships, religious organisations) often have less competition than national-name scholarships and offer better odds for the same effort.

When to use it

  • Submitting a scholarship application requiring a cover letter.
  • Local-foundation or community scholarships.
  • Professional-association or employer scholarships.
  • Discipline-specific scholarships (engineering, arts, etc.).
  • Renewable scholarships requiring annual re-application.

What to include

  • Applicant identification and contact.
  • Scholarship name, organisation, and amount.
  • College attending and major.
  • Why applying — connection to scholarship mission.
  • Qualifications matching the criteria.
  • Future goals and how the scholarship enables them.
  • List of enclosed application documents.

Frequently asked

For undergraduate funding, 15-30 is a common target. National scholarships are highly competitive (1-3% acceptance rates); local and niche scholarships often have much higher rates. The cumulative effort of applying to 25 scholarships over a senior year often yields more aid than concentrating on a few prestigious ones.
⚠ Legal disclaimer. Scholarship applications are highly variable in format and requirements. This template is a generic starting point; follow each scholarship's specific guidelines exactly (page limits, font/spacing, attachment requirements, submission method). Common pitfalls: missed deadlines, missing required attachments, wrong essay length, failure to address all specified criteria. School counsellor offices typically maintain lists of local scholarships and can flag deadline conflicts.
