═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

Dear Financial Aid Office,

I am writing to formally appeal my 2026-2027 financial aid award due to a change in family circumstances that the original FAFSA did not capture.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

CURRENT AWARD AND ESTIMATED ADDITIONAL NEED

  Current total aid award: $28,000.00
  Estimated additional need: $12,000.00

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

REASON FOR APPEAL

► Change in family financial circumstances

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

DETAILED EXPLANATION

On 2026-04-15, my parent (primary financial supporter) was laid off from their position at Acme Corporation due to a department restructuring. The income loss is approximately $95,000 annually, reducing household income from $145,000 to approximately $50,000 (one parent's income remains).
The FAFSA used for the 2026-2027 award reflected the prior household income; with the income loss, the actual financial situation is significantly more constrained than the FAFSA suggests. We have submitted updated documentation to the FAFSA reconsideration process, but the institution-side aid package is also affected.
Additional out-of-pocket medical expenses for unrelated household member treatment in 2025 totalled approximately $14,000 (above insurance coverage), further reducing available family savings. Documentation is attached.

DOCUMENTATION OFFERED

Termination letter from Acme Corporation dated 2026-04-15.
Parent's most recent pay stubs (showing income reduction).
Unemployment claim filing confirmation.
2025 family medical expense summary with receipts (out-of-pocket, beyond insurance).
Updated household budget showing current income vs essential expenses.
IRS Form 4506-T (transcript request) authorising the financial aid office to verify income directly.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

REQUESTED ADJUSTMENT

I respectfully request that the financial aid office:
  1. Re-evaluate the aid package using the updated household income (approximately $50,000) rather than the FAFSA-reported $145,000.
  2. Increase the institutional aid component (need-based grants) by approximately $12,000 to reflect the increased financial need.
  3. Adjust the loan recommendations to reduce reliance on private student loans, which would compound the family's current financial pressure.

═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════

I am committed to my education at Stanford University and am working hard to manage the financial implications of the changed circumstances. Without an adjusted aid package, I may not be able to continue enrolment.

I am available to meet, by phone or video, to discuss this appeal and provide any additional information the office requires.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

About this template

Financial aid appeals are common and frequently successful when the circumstances are genuine and well-documented. The most-effective appeals involve "professional judgment" — the legal mechanism under federal law (HEA §479A) allowing financial aid administrators to adjust the FAFSA-derived aid award based on circumstances the FAFSA didn't capture. The most common categories: (1) significant income loss (job loss, retirement, disability), (2) high unreimbursed medical expenses, (3) catastrophic family events (death of a parent, divorce), (4) child care or elder care costs, (5) significant changes in family size, (6) special student status (homelessness, foster care, victim of abuse). The appeal must be in writing, must clearly state the circumstance, and must include documentation. Generic "we need more aid" letters without specific circumstances are typically denied. The aid office cannot simply increase grants beyond institutional limits, but can: re-evaluate the FAFSA Student Aid Index based on documented circumstances; increase Pell Grant eligibility (up to the federal maximum); increase institutional grant aid; substitute loans with grants where possible; consider higher cost of attendance (medical, transportation). Appeals should be filed early — financial aid is often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis once budgets are set, and late appeals may face depleted institutional funds. Multiple appeals across years for the same family circumstances signal an enduring change that the FAFSA recalibration should capture; ongoing recalibration is normal. For seriously different financial circumstances (parental divorce mid-year, death of a parent), separate from the appeal, the family should also re-file FAFSA with updated information.

When to use it

  • Significant family income loss after FAFSA filing.
  • High unreimbursed medical expenses not on FAFSA.
  • Family-circumstance changes (divorce, death, disability).
  • Outside scholarship received that should adjust the institutional package.
  • Cost-of-attendance increases (housing, transportation) not in original calculation.
  • Special-circumstances reviews for unique situations.

What to include

  • Student identification and current aid summary.
  • Specific reason category for the appeal.
  • Detailed explanation of circumstances.
  • Documentation supporting the change.
  • Specific requested adjustment (with dollar figures).

Frequently asked

As soon as the circumstances are clear and documented. Don't wait until the academic year is well underway. Many financial aid offices have specific deadlines (e.g., August 1 for fall awards). For mid-year changes, appeals can be filed at any time but should reference the specific term affected.
⚠ Legal disclaimer. Financial aid appeals follow federal "professional judgment" rules under HEA §479A and institution-specific policies. Each school sets its own appeal procedures, deadlines, and documentation requirements. Federal Pell Grants and loans depend on FAFSA Student Aid Index calculations; institutional grants depend on the school's allocations. State aid programs have their own appeal processes. For complex situations (divorce, death of parent, undocumented status, complex family financial structures), school financial-aid counsellors and non-profit organisations like the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) provide guidance.
