Method: empty the garage, sort into zones (and a keep/donate/trash pile), then put
high-frequency items at eye level and seasonal items up high. Go vertical — walls
and ceiling free up the floor.

About this template

A garage gets out of control because everything competes for the same undefined space; the fix is to give every category a **zone** and then store within it. Working zone-by-zone — tools, lawn & garden, sports, automotive, seasonal, and bulk storage — turns a vague "clean the garage" into a series of small, finishable decisions, and it makes the result stick because everyone knows where things go back. The process that works: **take everything out**, sort into your zones plus a ruthless **keep / donate / trash** staging pile, then assign each zone a physical area before putting anything back. Two principles do most of the work. First, **go vertical**: walls (pegboards, hooks, slat-wall) and overhead/ceiling racks free up the floor, which is the scarcest and most valuable space — keep the floor for the car and the heaviest items. Second, **store by frequency**: daily and weekly items at eye level and within easy reach, seasonal and rarely used items up high or in the back. Put hazardous materials (fuel, oil, fertilizer, pesticides) in a ventilated, sealed, child-safe spot away from heat and ignition sources, and never store propane indoors. **Label everything** — bins, shelves, and zones — because labels are what keep the system from drifting back to chaos; this template includes cut-out zone labels for exactly that. Use clear, stackable bins so you can see contents, and keep a permanent donate/return box so clutter has an exit. Re-inventory once or twice a year and the garage stays usable instead of slowly filling up again.

When to use it

  • Organizing or decluttering a garage from scratch.
  • Planning zones before installing shelving or wall storage.
  • Inventorying what belongs in each garage zone.
  • Printing labels to keep the system in place.

What to include

  • Defined zones: tools, lawn & garden, sports, automotive, seasonal, bulk.
  • An inventory of what belongs in each zone.
  • A keep / donate / trash staging area.
  • Vertical storage (walls, ceiling) to free the floor.
  • Printed labels for bins, shelves, and zones.

Frequently asked

Take everything out, then sort into your zones plus a keep/donate/trash pile. Assign each zone a physical area before putting anything back, and be ruthless with the donate/trash pile — most garage clutter is things you no longer use. Working zone by zone keeps the project finishable instead of overwhelming.
