About this calculator

The Wilks formula normalizes powerlifting totals across bodyweights, letting a 60kg lifter and a 120kg lifter compete on a single score. Higher = stronger pound-for-pound. 500+ is elite international level (the Wilks 500 club). Most powerlifting federations have moved to IPF GL or Wilks2 since 2020 due to bias issues with the original Wilks at extreme bodyweights — but the original Wilks remains the most widely understood gym-floor benchmark.

Frequently asked

Wilks vs. Wilks2 vs. IPF GL?+
Original Wilks (1995): widespread, slightly biased at extremes. Wilks2 (2020): updated coefficients. IPF GL: federation's current standard. All similar within ±5 points.
Score targets?+
Beginner: 200-275. Intermediate: 275-350. Advanced: 350-425. Elite: 425+. World-class: 525+. Female elite: 425+ (different curve).
Does it work for one lift?+
Wilks is for the total of all 3 powerlifting lifts. Use it on one lift with caution; results bias toward bigger lifters.
Is it fair across sexes?+
Female coefficients aim to make the same Wilks score equally rare. World-class male and female total Wilks both around 525-550.
Cleaner alternative?+
For Olympic weightlifting: Sinclair coefficient. For strongman: no clean standard. For powerlifting: Wilks remains the lingua franca.
