About this calculator
Cooling steps prevent two failures: cake breaking in the pan (let pan-rest 10-15 min so structure sets), and frosting melting on a warm cake (let rack-cool until cool to touch — usually 1-2 hours). For perfect smooth frosting, refrigerate the cake an additional hour after rack cooling. Cupcakes cool fastest (~45 min total). 10-inch round + bundt are slowest (~100 min). Don't shortcut — frosting a warm cake is the #1 cause of disasters in home baking.
