About this calculator

16" on-center is the residential standard for load-bearing walls in the US (24" allowed under "advanced framing" in some codes). Each corner needs extra studs (typically 3 for an L corner). Add 10% waste for cuts, defects, and re-cuts.

16" vs 24" spacing?+
16" is conservative and traditional. 24" with engineered headers and 2×6 studs ("advanced framing") uses ~30% less lumber and same load capacity.
Why "+1"?+
You need a stud at the END of the wall, plus one every spacing-distance — so for a 16-ft wall at 16" spacing: 12 spaces + 1 = 13 studs.
Corner studs — why 3?+
A corner needs 2 studs (one in each direction) plus a "drywall backer" to give the inside corner something to attach to. Some configurations use 4.
Plate count?+
Top plate and bottom plate: each = wall length / 16 ft (board length) rounded up, doubled (top is usually doubled).
Headers and king studs?+
Add separately for door/window openings. Standard: a header sized per span + a king stud + a jack stud each side.
