About this template

International travel packing is the difference between a smooth trip and a 3-hour scramble in a foreign pharmacy. The checklist groups items by where they live (carry-on vs. checked, documents vs. clothing) so you do not pack a 5-oz toiletries bottle in a carry-on and learn at the TSA bin that you have to choose between throwing it out or going back to ticketing. Critical items live in the carry-on: passport, prescription medications in original packaging, electronics, and one change of clothes. The 3-1-1 rule (3.4 oz / 100 mL containers in a 1-quart bag) applies to all US-departing and most international flights. Lithium batteries (laptop, phone, power-bank ≤ 100 Wh) MUST be carry-on per IATA + FAA — never checked.

When to use it

  • International leisure or business trips 3 nights+
  • Any trip requiring a passport (carry-on documents differ from domestic)
  • Family trips where one parent packs for multiple people
  • Adventure / activity-specific travel (the special-items section adapts)

What to include

  • Documents (passport, visa, insurance, copies)
  • Money (local currency + no-FTF card + travel-notify)
  • Electronics (universal adapter + 100-240V check + power bank in carry-on)
  • Carry-on essentials (change of clothes, 3-1-1 toiletries)
  • Climate-appropriate clothing in expected quantities
  • Toiletries (with note: buy at destination to save weight)
  • Health + medications (original Rx bottles, carry-on)
  • Pre-departure 48-hour tasks (online check-in, mail hold, etc.)

Frequently asked

Most countries require at least 6 months of validity beyond your planned return date — this is the "6-month rule" and applies to most Schengen / EU, all of South / Southeast Asia, much of Africa, and several Latin American destinations. Some countries (UK, Ireland, Canada, Mexico) only require validity through the date of your return. Check your destination on the US State Dept site (travel.state.gov) before booking — being denied boarding for an expired passport happens.
