About this template
A mechanic shop authorisation document protects both the customer and the shop by establishing the scope of authorised work in writing before repairs begin. State auto-repair statutes typically REQUIRE shops to provide written estimates and obtain written authorisation before repairs - California Bureau of Automotive Repair regulations, Oregon ORS 646A.260-280, Massachusetts 940 CMR 5.00, and similar state-specific laws. Without written authorisation, shops can't enforce mechanic's liens for unauthorised work and may face state-licensing-board sanctions. The customer's key protections: (1) written estimate before work begins (legally required in most states for repairs over $50-$100); (2) maximum authorised amount cap (shops cannot exceed without re-authorisation); (3) right to refuse additional work; (4) right to receive old parts back (statutory right in California, many other states); (5) detailed final invoice itemising parts, labor, and any other charges. Common shop tactics that violate these protections: (a) "discovering" additional needed work after vehicle is in shop and pressuring approval; (b) charging for parts/labor not on the original estimate; (c) refusing to release vehicle until inflated bill is paid; (d) installing aftermarket parts when OEM was specified. Shop disputes typically resolve through (1) state Bureau of Automotive Repair complaint, (2) Better Business Bureau filing, (3) credit-card chargeback for disputed amounts, (4) small-claims court. State law often imposes statutory damages (typically 2x-3x actual damages) for shop violations of state auto-repair laws. For complex disputes or expensive repairs, consult a consumer-protection attorney - many state UDAP statutes apply to auto-repair fraud with attorney-fee shifting.
