About this template
A DMV Power of Attorney (POA) authorises another person to conduct vehicle-related transactions on the principal's behalf at the state DMV. Common scenarios: (1) selling a vehicle while out-of-town - the buyer or agent handles title transfer; (2) gifting a vehicle to a family member who handles paperwork; (3) authorising a relative to register or renew plates; (4) handling vehicle transactions for elderly or incapacitated family members. State DMV POAs are typically simpler and more limited than general POAs - they're restricted to motor-vehicle matters, often to a specific vehicle or transaction. Most states have a specific DMV POA form (Oregon DMV Form 5-103, California REG 260, etc.); using the state's official form ensures DMV acceptance. Generic POAs may or may not be accepted depending on DMV staff and state law. Notarisation is required in most states for DMV POAs that authorise title transfer; some states require additional witnesses. The POA must specify: (1) the principal and agent identification with driver license numbers; (2) the specific vehicle (or "all vehicles I own"); (3) the scope of authority (transfer only, all transactions, registration, etc.); (4) effective date and expiration. The DMV typically retains a copy when the agent uses the POA. Important limitation: a DMV POA does NOT authorise the agent to take ownership of the vehicle; the agent acts on the principal's behalf in transactions but cannot self-deal (e.g., agent cannot sign title transferring the vehicle to themselves without separate authorisation). For elderly or incapacitated family members, a more comprehensive durable POA may be appropriate; consult an elder-law or estate-planning attorney.

What to include
- Principal identification with driver license.
- Agent identification with driver license.
- Specific vehicle or scope of authority.
- Specific authorities granted.
- Effective period (start and expiration).
- Notarisation (required in most states).
