Distance Traveled Calculator (Speed × Time)

Calculate how far you travel from your speed and time, in miles, kilometers, and meters, with flexible units. Runs in your browser.

Distance = speed × time. At a constant average speed, this is exactly how far you travel. Units are converted with exact factors (1 mph = 0.44704 m/s). For trips with varying speed, use your average speed. Everything runs in your browser.

About this tool

This calculator finds the distance you cover given a speed and an amount of time — the third form of the fundamental motion equation, distance = speed × time. Enter a speed in mph, km/h, or m/s and a time in hours, minutes, or seconds, and it returns the distance in miles, kilometres, and metres at once. Travelling at 60 mph for 2.5 hours covers 150 miles; running at 3 m/s for 20 minutes covers 3,600 metres. As with its companion calculators, the result is exact only for a constant speed — if your speed varies over the trip, plug in your average speed and you'll get the total distance, since average speed is defined precisely so that average speed × time equals distance. It's the everyday tool for estimating how far a trip will take you, how far you'll run or cycle at a given pace, the range you can cover before a stop, or for solving physics problems. The conversions are exact (one mph is 0.44704 m/s; one mile is 1609.344 metres), so you can freely mix input and output units. Together with the speed-from-distance-and-time and time-from-distance-and-speed tools, this completes the trio for the speed–distance–time relationship: give any two of the three quantities and you can solve for the one you need. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  • Enter your speed and choose its unit (mph, km/h, or m/s).
  • Enter the time and choose its unit (hours, minutes, or seconds).
  • Read the distance in miles, kilometers, and meters.
  • For variable-speed trips, use your average speed.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate distance from speed and time?
Distance = speed × time. At 60 mph for 2.5 hours, distance = 150 miles. The tool converts units and shows miles, km, and meters together.
Does it assume constant speed?
Yes. The result is exact for a constant speed. If your speed varies, use your average speed — by definition, average speed × time equals the total distance.
Can I mix units?
Yes. Pick any speed unit and any time unit; the calculator converts both to a common basis and reports distance in miles, kilometers, and meters.
How do I convert the time if I have minutes and mph?
Just select "minutes" for time and "mph" for speed — the tool handles the conversion (it internally turns minutes into hours/seconds as needed). No manual conversion required.
What is the relationship between the three motion calculators?
They all use distance = speed × time. This one solves for distance; the others solve for speed (distance ÷ time) and time (distance ÷ speed). Use whichever two values you know.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser.
