About this calculator

A US butter stick is the standard packaged size: 4 oz = 113 g = ½ cup = 8 tbsp. Two sticks = 1 cup, four sticks = 1 lb (most US butter is sold in 1-lb 4-stick boxes). Wrappers usually have tbsp markings printed every ½ tbsp — the easiest way to measure butter without unwrapping. EU butter often comes in 250g blocks (~2.2 sticks). Be careful with European butter conversions in recipes assuming sticks.

Frequently asked

What's a stick of butter outside the US?+
Mostly a US-only thing. UK and EU sell 250g blocks. Australia: 250g. Sticks are a US convenience.
Salted vs. unsalted?+
Same mass — 113g either way. But salted contains ~1.5% salt, so subtract ~¼ tsp salt per stick if recipe assumes unsalted.
Why are wrappers marked in tbsp?+
Easy measurement without unwrapping or melting. Cut at the line, no measuring spoon needed.
"Half a stick"?+
4 tbsp = ¼ cup = 2 oz = 56 g. Common in cookie recipes.
Margarine substitution?+
Same volume but 5-10% less fat by mass. Affects browning and texture in baking; works fine in most savory uses.
