The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA Scientific Opinion 2015) recommends a more conservative 3 mg/kg body weight per single dose and 5.7 mg/kg per day — which works out to about 400 mg/day for a 70-kg adult but 300 mg for a 53-kg adult, recognizing weight-dependent dose-response. For pregnancy, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG Committee Opinion 462, reaffirmed 2023) limits intake to 200 mg/day. Adolescents 12–18: AAP recommends ≤ 100 mg/day; younger children should avoid. Caffeine half-life in healthy adults is 5 hours on average (range 2–12 hours) per Mandel HG, Food Chem Toxicol 2002 — meaning 200 mg consumed at 4 PM still has 50 mg active at midnight, enough to disrupt sleep onset for caffeine-sensitive people. Why is the pregnancy limit so low?
Caffeine crosses the placenta freely and the fetus has limited ability to metabolize it. Pregnant metabolism also slows ~2-3× (CYP1A2 down-regulation), so the same dose reaches higher and longer-lasting blood levels. ACOG OC 462 (2023) limits intake to 200 mg/day.
Is half-life really 5 hours?
