About this calculator

Engine displacement measures total cylinder volume swept per revolution. Bigger displacement = generally more power and torque. Common conversions: 5.0L = 5000cc = 305 cu in. 350 cu in (Chevy small-block) = 5.7L. Motorcycles often quoted in cc (600cc, 1000cc). US "muscle" era used cu in (327, 350, 396, 454). Modern global era uses liters. Forced-induction (turbo, supercharger) adds ~30-100% effective displacement.

Frequently asked

Common conversions?+
5.0L=305 ci. 5.7L=350 ci. 6.2L=378 ci. 7.0L=427 ci. 1.6L=1600cc=98 ci.
Bore × stroke matters?+
Same displacement can be "oversquare" (wide bore, short stroke = revs higher) or "undersquare" (narrow bore, long stroke = more torque, lower-revving).
Displacement and HP?+
Modern NA: roughly 50-90 hp/L. Turbocharged: 100-200 hp/L. F1: 350+ hp/L. Wide range — not a tight relationship.
EV equivalent?+
EVs have no displacement — measured in kW (1 kW ≈ 1.34 hp). A 200 kW (268 hp) motor is comparable to a 3.0-3.5L gas engine in performance.
Cubic inches or cm³?+
cc = cm³ (same thing). cu in = imperial; cc/L = metric. Prefer L for modern cars; ci for classic American iron.
