About this calculator

Molarity (M) is moles of solute per liter of solution. A 1 M solution has 1 mole dissolved per liter. Calculations work in three directions: find M from amount and volume, find amount needed for a target M, or find volume for a given amount.

How is molarity different from molality?+
Molarity uses volume of solution; molality uses mass of solvent. Molality is preferred for temperature-sensitive work because mass doesn't change with temperature.
Why mol/L instead of g/L?+
Because chemistry happens at the molecular level; reactions consume reactants in mole ratios, not gram ratios. Molarity is the natural unit.
How to make a 1 M NaCl solution?+
1 mol NaCl = 58.44 g. Dissolve 58.44 g in water and dilute to exactly 1 L (not 1 L of water — total volume = 1 L).
What's the practical M range?+
Most lab work: 0.001 to 5 M. Industrial chemistry can go up to ~10 M. Beyond that, solubility limits kick in.
What is the difference between solution and solvent volume?+
Solution = solvent + solute combined. Molarity uses solution volume. Adding solute to solvent increases volume slightly — measure carefully.
