About this tool
National Savings Certificate (NSC) is a fixed-income savings bond backed by the Government of India, available at any post office. Fixed 5-year tenure, guaranteed returns, and Section 80C tax benefit (₹1.5L cap combined with all other 80C investments). Interest is compounded annually but paid only at maturity — however, the interest earned in years 1-4 is deemed reinvested and qualifies for 80C in the year it accrues (a smart tax trick). Only the final year's interest is fully taxable without reinvestment benefit. Rate is locked at purchase for the full 5-year period.
Frequently asked
Q3 FY 2025-26 rate = 7.7% p.a., compounded annually. Rate is set by the Ministry of Finance and reviewed quarterly, but once you purchase, the rate is LOCKED for the full 5-year tenure — even if the government reduces rates later.
