About this tool
Employers in India deduct income tax at source (TDS) from your monthly salary. The monthly TDS = annual income tax ÷ 12 (approximately). Employers compute annual tax based on your declared regime + declared deductions (80C/HRA/80D) at start of FY, then deduct proportionately each month. If you under-declare deductions (or the regime is wrong), TDS gets over-deducted — you recover refund at ITR filing. If you over-declare, employer deducts less than actual tax due — you must pay balance at ITR filing + interest under 234B/234C. Best to declare accurately in January (deduction declaration window).
Frequently asked
TDS is deducted each MONTH from your salary — usually on payment date. Employer files quarterly TDS return (Form 24Q) with income tax department. Your annual TDS + advance tax + self-assessment tax = total tax paid, reconciled at ITR filing via Form 26AS.
