About this tool
Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax in India was significantly rewritten in the Union Budget 2024 (effective 23-July-2024). All LTCG on financial assets is now taxed at a uniform 12.5% (was 10% for equity, 20% with indexation for debt/property). Listed shares and equity mutual funds get an annual ₹1.25 lakh exemption under Section 112A. Long-term = holding period >12 months for listed equity/equity MF, >24 months for immovable property/unlisted shares, >36 months (older assets). Add 4% Health & Education Cess to computed tax. Surcharge applicable above ₹50L/₹1Cr/₹2Cr income slabs.
