About this tool

Sale of physical gold in India attracts capital gains tax. Holding >36 months = LTCG at flat 12.5% + 4% cess (post-July-2024 rule; earlier was 20% with indexation). Holding <36 months = STCG at your slab rate. Making charges paid at purchase can be added to cost of acquisition. Physical gold typically loses 5-10% on resale due to jeweller's making-charge deduction — factor into sell price. Compare with Sovereign Gold Bonds where LONG-TERM capital gain at maturity is TAX-FREE under Section 47(viic) — dramatically better for long-term gold exposure.
